Purpose Upward Bound is a college preparatory program designed to encourage students to develop the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in postsecondary education. Southwest Virginia Community College is fortunate to sponsor two Classic Upward Bound Programs and a local Math/Science Upward Bound Program. Students must meet the following criteria for participation in the Upward Bound Program: 1. Neither parent has completed a four-year college degree, 2. Family income must meet specific federal guidelines, and 3. Students must maintain a 3.0 semester GPA. Upward Bound students are four times more likely to earn a college degree than students from similar backgrounds who are not involved in Upward Bound. Academic Programming Students in seven of the target high schools (Council, Grundy, Haysi, Honaker, Hurley, Richlands, and Twin Valley) meet after school or during school once a week. The curriculum integrates technology into workshops, which include study skills, goal setting, college selection, Kaplan SAT preparation, ACT Discover Career exploration, writing, internet research, etc. Study groups are created to help students master high school content and provide review sessions prior to tests and exams. Monthly cultural, career or college experiences are also included in the academic year calendar. Summer Programs The SwVCC Upward Bound program offers three distinctly different summer programs. The Summer Discovery Program, the ASPIRE Career Work Study Partnership and the College Bridge program. For more information on the summer program, go to the Summer Program page. |
